This unit briefly reviewed various methods of teaching language. The unit gave an overview of the ESA, or Engage-Study-Activate method developed by Jeremy Harmen. The first stage involves arousing the students interest and engaging them in using the language. The second stage involves a more structured study of the language usage and it's forms. The third stage involves students using what they have learned to practice and increase fluency and accuracy. It is clear that there are unlimited fun, interesting, and productive ways to lead the students through these stages that maximize interest, enjoyment, learning and fluency. I think the most important concepts presented are that the students need to feel comfortable and encouraged to practice their new language skills without fear of failure or embarrassment. The atmosphere in the classroom needs to be one of teamwork and of helping each other. The teacher needs to be flexible and sensitive to the needs of the students which are ever changing. The teacher should always be evaluating and adjusting the activities to maximize the benefit to the students, paying attention to what works and what doesn't.
