This was a grammar focused lesson on modals, phrasal verbs, passive voice, and relative clauses. Modal auxiliary verbs relate to obligation, possibility/probability, permission/prohibition, ability, and advice. A good table with examples is provided. Teaching ideas include a role play where a doctor tells a patient what they should do, making rules for a new club or hotel, and writing the meaning of traffic (or other) signs. Passive voice shifts the focus from the doer of the verb to the action itself. A table is provided for how to change each tense into passive voice, and similar tables with examples are available online. Ideas for how to teach passive voice in class include ordering scrambled sentences, and Jeopardy-like quizzes with the questions written in passive voice. Relative clauses give more information, and follow different rules when the information is essential or non-essential. Phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs. There are three forms: intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable. A good idea for teaching phrasal verbs is keeping track of those that have been taught and using them naturally during the Activate phase activities.
