This unit covers pronunciation and phonology. While it can certainly be daunting to deal with the subject of pronunciation as it can vary so much depending on the situation, mood, and even the accent of the speaker, it's an essential part of teaching English. Phonology, which is the general study of the physical properties of sounds, includes the following areas: intonation, stress, and rhythm. This unit also touches on how teachers can utilize the phonemic alphabet while teaching, and provides definitions of articulation including the speech organs, manner of articulation, and place of articulation which make it easier for teachers to understand how best to demonstrate or teach students speech. The speech organs include the tongue, larynx, glottis, alveolar ridge, hard palate, and the soft palate. The place of articulation, that is the physical location of a phoneme's production, is connected to different organs or areas including: velar, palatal, palatal-alveolar, alveolar, dental, labio-dental, bilabial, and glottal. The manner of articulation consists of plosive sounds, fricative sounds, nasal sounds, lateral sounds, affricate sounds and approximant sounds.
