This unit has made me think about the relationship between students and teachers in a more structured way. While most information seems self evident in hindsight, the mere act of putting the facts down in bullet points has given me food for thought. I have gained appreciation for how many variables are at play when planning a lesson. Age, fluency level and motivation interact in complex ways, requiring teachers to finetune their approach to each student. I?ve found myself comparing a good teacher to host of a dinner party. Both need to keep attendees comfortable and entertained, be the life of the party or stand back when the evening is going smoothly, participate and be in control at the same time. Of course, the teacher also needs to correct and assess the students; something a dinner host should never do. After the event, attendees should feel like their time was spent well and they had gained something; in the case of a language class, that something being new knowledge and skill. One thing I feel like has not been mentioned in the unit is that teachers themselves must be open to constructive criticism, as they are not superhuman and can make mistakes.
