Teach English in SAntang Zhen - Nanning Shi
Unit 11 covered the teaching of the receptive skills reading and listening. These receptive skills are divided between reading/listening for a purpose, or for entertainment. The specialist skills people employ when reading or listening are: predictive skills - guessing the content from a headline or short introduction; scanning to find specific information; skimming to understand the overall gist of the text or dialogue; deducing the meaning from context; and focusing on all the information in detail in order to complete a task. When teaching these skills, teachers need to be mindful of the language chosen such as word length, sentence length and speed, the number of unfamiliar words and grammar structures and authentic and non-authentic material. Teachers can generate students' interest by being enthusiastic, discussing the topic, showing pictures, predicting together what the topic might be and other 'engage' phase activities. Comprehension tasks should also be included to promote students' understanding. This unit was very short but still full of useful information. I particularly appreciated the list of the specialist skills needed for reading and listening.
