Receptive skills include reading and listening. Learners and users of a language may listen or read for a variety of reasons, and thus may choose to employ one of several strategies while engaging in these activities. Examples of listening for a specific purpose include skimming a scientific article in order to understand the main ideas presented therein, or listening to a radio weather report to determine the next day's forecast. Depending on why a person is reading or listening, they may need to read or listen very carefully in order to grasp all of the details, or they may only need to skim or listen in less detail to simply understand the main ideas presented. In order to help students of English with listening or reading activities, the instructor should first engage them by discussing what the students already might know about the general topic. Then, the teacher should pre-teach relevant vocabulary that might be unfamiliar or challenging for the students to understand when it is encountered. Later, they could listen to the audio or read the text and try to understand as much as possible, followed by answering questions and presenting findings to the class.
