There are four types of past tenses: the past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. The past simple is formed by adding the past simple tense of the verb after the subject. It is used to state a completed action at a definite time in the past. The past continuous tense is formed by adding was (for singular subject)/ were (for plural subjects) and the '-ing' form of the verb after the subject. It is used to indicate an action that is in progress in the past. The past perfect tense is formed by adding ?had? and the past participle form of the verb after the subject. It is used to tell a completed past action before some other past action. The past perfect continuous is formed by adding ?had been? plus the '-ing' form of the verb after the subject. It is used to talk about an action that has been going on for some time before some other action in the past. The common mistakes of students in using the past tenses are in the structure of the sentence and the form of the verb. These common mistakes must be targeted by the teacher during the activate stages while bearing in mind that student talk time should be maximized.
