Unit 7 discusses strategies of engaging new language learners. My understanding of this unit is the significance of the use of new language ? vocabulary, grammar and functions to effectively teach new language to learners. It is essential for English Language learners to be exposed to opportunities that will enable them to practice the vocabulary and grammatical structures associated with language functions with regards to both oral and written contexts. From my perspective as a teacher, while preparing a lesson, it is important to determine an effective strategy of introducing the vocabulary or grammatical structure to my students, as well as how I intend to guide the students as they practice the various language structures. This unit discusses the importance of differentiating vocabulary, grammatical structures and functions at varying proficiency levels, with new students especially low functioning students ? lower levels of English proficiency. As a teacher, no matter which language function, it is imperative to simplify the content of the material in a way that accommodates the students? language skills, cognitive skills, and content knowledge.
