This last grammar unit dealt with modal auxiliary verbs, the passive voice, and an overview of the phrasal verbs and relative clauses. Modal auxiliary verbs are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verbs. These verbs include can, should, would, could, must, etc. These modal verbs express different ideas regarding obligation, formality, possibility, ability, and advice. Secondly, the passive voice is used when the performer of an action is not known, revealed, or important. In the passive voice, the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. An example would be, \"The door was painted by Thu last week.\" Here, the focus is on the door, not Thu, the painter. The unit also discussed relative clauses, which are dependent clauses that modifies a noun. Relative clauses are further divided into defining and non-defining clauses whereby information given in defining relative clauses is essential the whole meaning and non-essential to non-defining clauses. Lastly, phrasal verbs consist of a verb plus one or two particle(s). There are three types of phrasal verbs. These are intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable.
