I found Unit 1 to be helpful because it clearly listed and defined what makes a good teacher and what makes a good learner. I loved reading about the different roles that a teacher takes on in the classroom. As a teacher myself, I have always thought of myself as a manager, assessor, and facilitator, but I had never realized that I am also many other things such as a prompter, participant, and observer. I found it to be extremely insightful to look at these different roles and reflect on which role is most appropriate based on the goal of a lesson. I also really enjoyed reading about the differences between young learners and adult learners. Working with each group has its own set of pros and cons. For example, adult learners are usually more motivated, mature, and need less discipline, but young learners are less nervous about making mistakes, more open-minded to learning a new language, and are more likely to absorb a new language through context than by comparing it with their native language. As someone who has worked with both age groups I thought it was very interesting to read about their different characteristics. Overall, I really enjoyed the first unit.
