My Spanish teachers helped me understand this concept better than any of my English teachers did ironically. The Spanish teachers used a line to show a timeline. Using dots, zig zags and bubbles, they visually represented the various tenses such as the past simple, past perfect and so on. I never understood these tenses in English, my native language up until this visual representation. I tried to use the same representation when I taught in Japan. It did work to a certain extent. However, few of even my adult students could properly explain the past perfect tense. They could get the meaning of whole sentences with it used. For their purposes, it was probably the appropriate level of understanding. It is so rare that we use these forms as the teacher in the film mentioned. Thus, finding examples isn't easy. Marco Antonio Solis has a song in Spanish that helped me labeled, Si No Te Hubieras Ido, Seria Tan Feliz - If you had not gone, I would be so happy. Adults can be hesitant to sing in class but children do not mind much. I will try to find more songs that use complex grammar structures so the structures can penetrate the hearts of the learners and not just their minds.
