Students need to be exposed to language, understand its meaning , understand how it is constructed and produce it. Grammar is the foundation. However students need to be introduced in a balanced way that addresses all four of those needs. Lessons that target grammar and vocabulary are often used with a straight arrow ESA approach, and lessons that are function based are more commonly taught with a boomerang or patchwork ESA approach. It is important that these techniques have been proven effective in general, but are not the only strategies for teaching these methods.
