Grammar is the topic of this unit and is one of the most difficult things for a student as well as a teacher, especially when English is not the students native language. As a teacher you will find yourself teaching English grammar at some point. It's important to understand grammar before teaching it. Nouns are words that name people, places or things. Adjectives are words that describes a noun and can be comparative or superlative. Articles are words that refer to members of a group, either specific (the) or any member (a/an). Verbs are 'doing' words, for example: go, play, smell. Adverbs add meaning or information to the action or state of the verb. A gerund is the -ing form of the verb, for example: playing. Pronouns are words that are used in place of more precise nouns. There are personal, possessive, reflexive and relative pronouns. Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in the sentence. Conjunctions join words or groups in a sentence, for example: and, but, or, as soon as, before. There are many rules that need to be applied at each of these. And it is important for an English teacher to have a good knowledge of grammar.
