The receptive skills in language (reading and listening) are the skills in which students \"receive\" or \"intake\" language. When using receptive skills, one is either reading/listening for a purpose or for pleasure. Reading and listening fluently requires much more than a basic understanding of all the words used in a dialogue or text. For example, in reading a text, they may need to employ predictive skills to understand the main point of a text through the title or introduction. They also may need to learn how to scan through many different texts to find a particular part or how to skim through a complete text to get the main idea without concern for the details. And at times, one may need to even deduce the meaning of a word or phrase from the context in which it was heard and may need to understand a meaning that is beyond the literal meaning of the words. Listening may be a more difficult skill for students to master than reading, as the text may only be heard once and is not \"captured\" in written form. Teachers should choose interesting texts at an appropriate language level for the students to help them to engage and grow in confidence in their receptive skills.
