In this unit, I learned what productive skills are and how to teach effectively teach them to students. Speaking and writing are productive language skills. The two have some differences, but many more similarities. With the skill of speaking, a correction can be made on the spot and contractions are more often used. The skill of writing can be more challenging, as it is can be more formal and contractions are not often used; handwriting needs to be legible, and the spelling correct, as well as the layout and punctuation. Writing may be situation, as in writing a postcard, formal letter, or an email; or it may be more creative, like stories, dialogues, and poetry. To engage students with each skill, a need or a desire has to be introduced--why we are practicing these skills. Students need to have the language knowledge to do an activity introduced. Having students work in pairs allows for student interaction and reduces stress. While most 'real world' writing is done individually, working in pairs or small groups allows students to exchange ideas from different sources that may be helpful or necessary. The ESA lesson format may be used when teaching both productive skills.
