I have learnt from this unit that there are various methodologies of teaching. Starting with the classical or grammar translation method various other direct methods based on how you learn your native language have been developed. The ESA method was developed in the 1990s by Jeremy Harmer and is the recommended method as it takes the positives and negatives from earlier teaching methodologies and allows a good degree of flexibility. The ESA method focuses on 3 levels- Engagement which gets the students talking and thinking in English, Study which is where the students are focused on the construction of the language and consists of board work and activities such as work sheets and finally the Activate phase, which requires students to put their learning into real life contexts. In order for ESA lessons to not become too predictable, 3 types of ESA lesson plans were developed straight arrow, boomerang and patchwork lessons. This unit also focused on corrections and the importance of allowing students to correct their own or classmates? mistakes or errors before the teacher needs to intervene. This allows the students to think about their mistakes and why they made them.
