Teach English in DashAtian Jiedao [incl. Yudong Jiedao] - Nanning Shi
I think teachers should use both spoken and written assessment for diagnostic tests because, as it could be appreacited, students may grow excitement during a test whereas they may do better in written assessment. Apart from students' emotional situation, doing the test so can give a more general, better idea to teachers to place them in groups. Teachers should utilize progress test. Teachers can do it either with written texts or they even might not need a text, but can prefer a game. It is also a way of practice, going over what has been learnt. In my past discussions with some very experienced English teachers, I heard they do come up with the clear idea that preparing test to assess students is not, even should not be compulsory. They do advocate that (not meaning external exams of course) students can simply be assessed through observation and communicative language teaching method is a great way to check to what extent they can use language. In my opinion, this is open to debate. I think it must not be out of mind that students' excitement or stress could considerably influence their progress. They might do better in written assesment or in spoken one and vice versa.
