Unit 10 discusses the different types of evaluation and testing. It is important to evaluate and test students because is shows their strengths and weaknesses and what language items need more work. Teachers evaluate new students before the course starts to see what groups and classes to put them in for their language level. At the beginning of the course there is also a diagnostic test which tells the teacher what students do and do not know. These tests will ensure that students are put into the appropriate class for their level of English language skills. Teachers often give their students progress tests which check what information is remembered and what is forgotten by the students. This test helps the teacher see what language skills need more practice. There are also practice tests which prepare students for external exams. External exams assess students on basic skills such as study and work place communications. Tests are often based on course book materials or taken from the teacher's book. If neither of these options are available the teacher will need to create his own tests using undone activities in the work book or activities taken form other materials.
