Unit 9 I have learnt about Lesson Materials. There are two types of materials to present to students, Authentic and Created Materials. These materials come in all types of media from reading to videos, from pictures to conversations. They can all be grouped into one of two categories. Either they are authentic materials, which may be found by native speakers, or they are created materials that were designed for their age and knowledge level to help them learn English. Authentic materials are of particular importance because they can help teach the students culture. When students interact with these materials and understand them they feel a sense of pride that they really are accomplishing something useful outside of the class. It helps them to learn and understand more than just the language they are studying. Another advantage is that these materials are often more interesting than the \"designated\" materials for the class. One advantage for the teacher, is that while authentic materials need to be chosen with care the teacher does not have to invent them from whole cloth. This is good if the teacher needs to create a lot of these, or does not have great skill or creativity.
