Unit thirteen focuses on pronunciation and in particular the phonology in the English language. Phonology is usually something that is not taught in normal English classes. I've had a lot of experience studying phonology but only in my linguistic classes taken in university. Before becoming a university student, I'd never been taught anything about phonology. Within studying phonology, there is intonation which explains all the different ways in which English speakers use stress and how it can change the meaning of sentences and even words. From this unit, I've learned some ways in which I can efficiently teach intonations and stress patterns. One of the main important concepts to get from unit thirteen is the fact that many learners of English may face difficulties when trying to pronounce words they are reading. And that is because English has a very weak grapheme to morpheme correspondence, meaning the way words are spelled in English don't have a strong connection to the way they are pronounced. Within this unit, there were many examples of this weak connection, therefore it's important for teachers of English to realize this concept that may become a problem for students.
