Authentic and created materials are both good resources to use in a lesson. Authentic materials - e.g. newspapers, menus, radio broadcasts, TV show, etc. - are better suited to more advanced students, or to consolidate a concept beginners are already comfortable with. Using authentic materials makes a lesson more relevant, interesting, topical, and consolidating for the class, although it does require slightly more work and creativity for a teacher to find and adapt the material. Created material is often ready-to-go and matches perfectly with the syllabus, but can be predictable and non-simulating as it might not apply to their own lives.
