Vocabulary is a critical component of learning a new language--understanding new words, their meaning, their common forms of usage, and when to use them is a critical component of speaking/understanding any language. Similarly, understanding grammatical structures are essential for learning how to speak/understand any language--and this can be difficult in English, given how the formal or written language changes when it is spoken in common usage. In this sense, it is important to teach both the formal and informal grammatical structures (as well as vocabulary) in order to help students understand what certain native speakers are saying.
