Teach English in Zhongxing Zhen - Meizhou Shi
In unit 15 I have learned about evaluating and assessing students' progress and language ability. I have also learnt why and when we use certain evaluating tests and methods. We can assess students' language levels by either giving tutorials, letting the students evaluate themselves or give the, tests to complete. Tutorials is efficient and could be done by the whole group or by individual students. It just takes extra time. When giving tests, there are specific tests for specific groups of students at certain times of assessment. The first one would be a placement test which the students do for the teachers to be able to place them in the correct class according to their language level. There are then diagnostic tests too, which are similar to placement test but just more extensive. It is given at the start of a class to be able to know what the students already know about the language and for the teachers to be able to prepare corresponding lessons. Then you get periodic progress tests which is used to assess what language the students have remembered or acquired. It also encourages them to revise their work. Usually it should include a balance of all four skills as well as grammar and vocabulary. Practice tests would be the tests that are given in preparation for external examinations. They usually keep the same format and structure. Examples of general external examinations are, TOEFL, IELTS and TOEIC. there is also then the Cambridge assessments. Which includes general English test like, KEY, FCE, PET and CAE and then there is business English tests like BEC and BULATS. The skills for life exams that they offer too are more for people who have moved to Britain from other countries who needs English as a second language.
