In this unit I have learnt that inevitably,as an EFL teacher, I will face a variety of problems at certain times in my career. I think the suggestions made in this unit will prove to be helpful. I realise that when meeting a new group of students using informal activities to find out about students and create a rapport with them is a good idea. I have learnt that 'warmers' may be useful as they are short, fun, communicative activities that will motivate students and get them using English. I have also learnt that experiencing teaching students in the same group, that may have differing levels of English, will be challenging. I think pairing stronger students with weaker students is a good idea, as long as, you guard against the stronger students doing all the work. I realise large classes may be challenging too, as it is tricky to involve all pupils equally. However, I think by incorporating pair and group work all students can get involved in the lesson. Clearly, it should be an EFL teacher's main aim to speak in English, as you are a role model, and to encourage all students to speak in English as well. It should be made clear that use of the students' native language should be kept to a minimum. I have learnt that some students may be reluctant to participate but I found the suggestions in this unit helpful. Use of technology, paired work, role play and controlled practice are good ideas. I also now realise that it is important to help students improve their listening skills in English. I am sure modern technology, for example iPads and IWBs, will prove useful in allowing students to listen to spoken English. Having back-up activities or challenges readily available for students who complete work early is also a helpful suggestion.
