I have learned the distinction between the parts of speech in very simple and clear language. I am reminded of the difference between countable and uncountable nouns in a way that is easily explained ? for instance music is uncountable and universal. The unit breaks down parts of speech into sub categories. It makes it easier to understand how to explain the function of a verb, as verb of action and verb of state and the relation of these to gerunds. The unit also breaks down the regular and irregular verbs and their conjunctions, which are often impelled by logic that is difficult to explain. The rule that transitive verbs are always followed by an object, while intransitive verbs are not makes this issue clear. Gerunds are easier to use than to explain but the unit with the recorded video makes it clear that a gerund is a verb used as a noun, subject or object. I also learned the exceptions, the verbs followed by gerunds, as in he admitted stealing money. It is also easier to understand the relation between possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives. Adverbs are easily explained when broken down into descriptions of manner, place, time and degree as well as frequency. Prepositions are always difficult to explain, in all languages. The unit sets out clearly the rule for comparative adjectives and also the quirky issue of superlatives. The fact that all adjectives of three syllables or more must be preceded by most is also clear. The distinction between definite and indefinite articles is easily explained by the distinction between the general and specific. The task sheet is thorough and through this I consolidated my understanding of how to explain the basic parts of speech, with their many, quirky and often inexplicable exceptions.
