When preparing teaching materials, there are three main types that teachers may choose from. The first type is authentic materials, which consist of texts or recordings that are designed for native speakers rather than learners of the language. These may include excerpts from newspaper articles or novels, or radio or television reports. This type of material is typically better suited to more advanced learners, as the content cannot be controlled and may include rarer or more challenging grammar or vocabulary that beginning learners might not yet have learned. However, for learners whose level is sufficient, authentic materials provide a great opportunity to practice using the new language in a way that mimics language use as they would experience it in \"the real world.\" Created materials are the second type, consisting of materials that the teacher creates for the purposes of the classroom. Depending on the teacher's background and strengths, as well as the specific needs and interests of the class, these materials may take a wide variety of forms. In some cases, these materials may be used as an alternative to certain components from a course book (the third type of materials) that may not fit the needs, context, or interests of the students. Finally, the last type of materials are course books. These are generally produced by experts and their content has been tested to ensure efficacy. However, these are for a general audience and may not cater to the interests or specific needs or backgrounds of one's own students. Additionally, too much reliance on a course book may cause the teacher to become lazy. Thus, a good EFL teacher should use a combination of all three types of lessons, tailored to the needs, interests, and the specific levels of the students.
