Equipment and teaching aids are discussed in Unit 17. There is a long list of things that can aid the teacher in teaching his or her students. Some of these are the board (most useful), an overhead projector, course books, reference books, worksheets, visual aids, computers, videos and DVDs, cassette recorders, video cameras, the internet, dictionaries, and so forth. The Unit gives some guides as to the most effective use of these aids. The board is probably the most used aid in the classroom. It is suggested that a plan be made beforehand as to what to put on the board, in what configuration, such as organizing grammar, vocabulary, and other information in sections, and when the teacher wants to put the items on the board for maximum efficiency and to go along with the points the teacher is presenting in the lesson. Visual aids can be very stimulating to the students, as well as something that can create discussion and clarify meanings for vocabulary words. Cassette recorders can be used for recording students and then playing it back to show students what they sound like. This may help them correct their pronunciation. Or the recorder can be used for various other activities, such as making a news broadcast to play to the rest of the class. Worksheets are very helpful for students in study activities. Fill-ins, gap fills, crosswords, etc., can help to reinforce the grammar or vocabulary presented by the teacher in the Study phase of the lesson. There is a very rich wealth of internet sources to give teachers ideas for their lessons, as well as materials, activities, games and so forth. Dictionaries, resources, sites for authentic material, and the list goes on. I am sure I will use the websites listed in this lesson in the future when planning my lessons.
