This lesson covered material on the qualities possessed by good teachers and learners as well as a summary of teacher roles in the classroom and various motivations, behaviors, and proficiency levels of each language level from basic to advanced. A good teacher is fair, motivating, and has a good working knowledge of their subject. A good learner is willing to ask questions, able to accept corrections, and possesses a desire to learn. Teachers fill a variety of roles throughout the class including Manager, Assessor, Prompter, Monitor, Facilitator, and Model. Fair assessment and clear organization are essential to maintaining a good classroom environment and positive relationships with students and teachers should feel very comfortable shifting between roles throughout the class. Learners typically fall into one of six categories: Beginner, Elementary, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, and Advanced. At different ages and levels of learning, students are motivated by different things and may exhibit different behaviors in the classroom. For example, very young children 7 and under tend to be motivated by curiosity and pleasing their teachers whereas adolescents 14-18 years old most likely must be in class whether they want to be or not while adult learners typically choose to take language courses and are more self-motivated. Young learners are typically less self-conscious and willing to play versus adults and adolescents whereas older age groups usually have more advanced understanding of the language being taught and are more peer-focused or afraid of making mistakes. Differences in local culture, age of students, and level of the language being taught will all affect the classroom environment and methods of teaching and are very important factors to consider as a teacher.
