Unit 1 discusses important aspects between ESL teachers and learners. Teacher aspects can be grouped into three types: teacher personality, teacher roles and the teacher?s rapport with students. Whereas teacher personality involves traits like patients and a passion for teaching and teacher roles involves different functions enacted by teachers in the classroom like advising and prompting, both of these can potentially influence student rapport. For example, if a teacher does not have patients a/or can?t provide valuable language feedback, students may have difficulties in trusting and/or committing to the teacher student relationship. The reading also addresses important aspects to consider when addressing the whole notion of ?good language learners.? Some of these aspects can include: age, culture, language level and motivation for learning. However, the reading also indicates that to varying degrees these same factors can influence student learning, and that teachers are responsible for encouraging and fostering the following student traits wherever applicable: for students to have a willingness to listen and experiment with the language; for students to be willing to ask questions and to think about their own learning process, which can also include an acceptance for error correction. The reading then concludes with different standards for English level proficiencies which teachers can subsequently use to determine individual learning needs. In short, Unit 1 discusses different teacher and student traits that apply to English learning. However, the reading also emphasizes the importance for teachers to care about student learning, and that caring teachers will most likely influence student success by delivering classes that are varied and interesting.
