The material provided is this unit is very solid and helpful. In fact it correlates a lot with a university phonetics course, which was one of my favourite. Pronunciation is indeed the most neglected teaching aspect and personally I would be very excited to help my future students improve in this area. The main areas of the study of phonology studied in this unit are stress, rhythm, intonation and also the international phonetics alphabet. Intonation is a variation of volume and pitch a sentence and carries a message of a statement and different emotions. Intonation patterns are based on the notions of rise/fall. Teaching techniques for intonation are: - nonsense words - gestures - humming or singing - using marks on the board Next part of the unit is devoted to stress and some general rules, which, however, may have lots and lots of exceptions. Teaching techniques are similar and also involve chorus work and contrastive stress. There are also some aspects of the speech flow that are considered: sound joining and linked speech. Next unit block is devoted to the phonetic alphabet, symbols and sound characteristics based on their way of articulation (place and manner). Teaching pronunciation is effective when using: - peer dictation - your own mouth - visuals - phonemes - tongue twisters It is up to the teacher to decide when exactly to teach pronunciation during a lesson: - during the whole lesson - during a designated lesson slot - dealing with phonetics as and when required. A very handy list of recommended literature is provided at the end along with a reminder that we should be realistic in our goals when it comes to teaching phonetics and \"ideal\" pronunciation is probably unachievable, but it's perfectly fine as long as we achieve intelligibilty and confidence in our students.
