Teach English in JiAngnan Jiedao - Meizhou Shi
This unit has given me additional information about the meaning and usages of the four present tenses. I personally find this valuable and important because even though I have been speaking English fluently since childhood, I feel that there are still points of confusion in using the different verb tenses. So if I am experiencing minor confusions at times, I am sure that my students find it more challenging to process or understand how and when to use certain tenses. This unit has been a refresher for me and it has given me new ideas or approaches to elicit responses for each kind of present tense. The given activities for the Activate stage seem to be a lot of fun for the students and will allow them to explore more about the English language. Some activities are applicable for me and my students while some are not since I conduct lessons one-on-one via Skype. I have learned that it is also important to consider even the minor aspects of certain tenses, such as contractions [I/You/He/She/It] + [have / has] for the the Present Perfect and Present Perfect Continuous Tenses. Students might not have this kind of usage (contractions) in their native languages and therefore it is crucial for us teachers of EFL to explain how they are formed and when they are used. Though it might sound simple, changing the positive form to question form might also be a challenge for most EFL students. This is also something that we should allow them to master over time since there are changes in verb forms and some auxiliary words are added to the question form. Ex: She works at the store. Q: Does she work at the store? I have learned that understanding the Present Tenses is truly important since expressing most of our daily activities and even certain actions in the past are written in this tense.
