Unit 13 is about the books and the teaching materials that a teacher uses in and out site the class room to educate hers/ his students. The impact of the choice of study materials and books is huge. There is no right or wrong way, it all depends on the teachers and their manner of teaching. The study/ teach material fall in two categories- authentic and created. The authentic material may include magazines, programs, poems, songs, films, etc. The created materials are activities like flashcards, word search puzzles, crosswords, role-play, gap gill activities, etc. The choice of course book is also very important and the advantages and disadvantages must be taken in considerations when choosing the book/s. Some of the advantages are that a study book is usually expected by the students, it provides security for the students and the teachers, it usually provides a balanced mixed of grammar, skills and vocabulary, etc. Some of the disadvantages are it does not always fit the specific needs of all students, it might not be appealing to the students, it may make the teacher lazy and not well prepared, etc. When using the course book the teacher has four options. They are omitting, replacing, supplementing, and adapting. A teacher may decide to omit certain parts of the book, to replace some material with similar one, to add more study material, or to adapt the material to cater to the student's need and teaching style. During the process of selecting a course book (if the teacher has the liberty to decide which book to be used) a teacher should keep in mind the price of the book, availability, design, methodology, syllabus, teacher's guide, and more. All of the above should be taken in consideration to ensure that the teacher and the students will be able to take the maximum from the study book.
