Teach English in Fengliang Zhen - Meizhou Shi
This unit is concerned about printed course books for English teaching, and about additional materials for supplementing the course books. Course books usually come with a set of materials, including a student's book for classroom use, a workbook for individual and supplementary work, cassettes for home and class, a teacher's book giving step-by-step teaching guides, and a video in some cases. Advantages of course books are that they are usually expected by the students, they offer a complete program so that the teacher does not have to create a program from scratch, it provides a graded syllabus suitable for the students, and it is usually a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and skills work. Disadvantages of course books are that they do not always suit the specific needs and interests of the students, the students may not like the book, and exclusive use of the book may become predictable and boring for the students. In these cases, it may be necessary for the teacher to create his/her own materials to supplement or replace aspects of the course book. These supplementary materials are divided into two groups: authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials include programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus and films. Because authentic materials are not graded for levels, it is necessary to select them carefully for use. Advantages of authentic materials are that they are real and interesting, motivating, can build confidence and they can be geared to the interests of particular groups of students. The second group of materials are created materials which are created by the teacher to replace or supplement a course book. Created materials include crosswords, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, gap-fill activities and picture stories.
