In this unit, we learn how to set the plan of ESA. It means Engage, Study and Activate. We can apply ESA methods to plan a class. Vocabulary and grammar commonly use straight arrow and functions easily use boomerang and patchwork. Before that, it says how is important to make a balance of grammar, vocabulary and functions. Especially vocabulary can be branches of a tree. So knowing lots of words makes colourful various fluent English. There are two types of words. Receptive vocabulary and productive vocabulary. Receptive vocabulary means words that the student knows but doesn?t use. And the productive vocabulary means words that the student knows and uses. Most students knows many words than the words that they know and use. The degrees of how much difficult and easy are: 1. Whether the words is similar to student?s mother language or not. 2. Whether the words is similar to the words that they already known. 3. How much the spelling and the pronunciation is complex. 4. Appropriacy To apply the techniques ESA for vocabulary teaching, in the engage step teachers can apply eliciting and explaining realia, mime, action, pictures, contrast, discussion discovery. And in the Study step, we can involve students using Gap-fill exercises, word searches, crosswords, matching exercises, example sentences, pronunciation exercises such as drilling and study from texts and dialogues. The last Activate step, it include such activities as open class, small group or pari discussion, role-play, simulation, story building, material production task(poster, advertisement, ets.) and debate. In this unit, we try applying this ESA method in real in work book. And it is also used in real classes to make a plan before the classes. We can add more steps in study and activate. But should be finished with feedback or activate.
