This module introduces lesson planning. Lesson planning can be varied depending on the teacher. Inexperienced teachers should start with a detailed plan to help keep the class on course. As a teacher gains experience he/she will learn how to teach experimentally. Teachers should also bear in mind that students usually dictate the class. Therefore teachers must be prepared to follow the student lead for the direction the class will take. Also, teachers must keep in mind that if he/she has to be out and a substitute teacher is called in to cover her class, the lesson plan must be written very logically, and kept simple so that the substitute can follow the plan easily. There are some very important items that a teacher should include in a lesson plan. They are as follows: * Basic information about the class i.e date and time, teacher's name, class level and number of students. * Learner's objectives - what a teacher wants the student to be able to do after the class is taught. * Personal Aims - what the teacher wishes to improve or achieve personally. * Language Point- what will the target lesson be centered on an how it will fit with other lessons. * Anticipated problems- what problems do the teacher foresee for the students and herself/himself and the solutions. * Procedures- how will the objectives be accomplished. * The phases of the lesson- engage, study or activate. * Timing - how long will the activities take. * Interaction- who will be interacting at each stage. Good teachers will not only monitor their students work, but also her/his work as well. It will serve teachers well to note their own strengths and weaknesses, to be flexible with the lesson planning, to observe the effectiveness of the ESA phases of the class, and check the extent to which the objectives and personal aims were meet.
