Teach English in Bingcun Zhen - Meizhou Shi
This video lesson unit compared two different teaching styles, the first of which was ineffective in student learning and the second being highly effective. Additionally, this unit provided a firsthand account of the great impact that teacher attitude has on student learning and achievement. As a student teacher, I have experience in knowing the truth to this statement. If you, as an educator, display enthusiasm towards your lesson, the chances that the students will reflect the same attitude will be more likely. This enthusiasm by the teacher, as well as simple gestures such as smiles, body language, learning the students' names, will help to not only increase engagement and promote initiative to do well, but will further aid in building a strong and trustworthy teacher-student rapport. Students, especially of a second language, must feel comfortable and accepted in their classroom environment in order to display more confidence in taking chances with answering questions (i.e. comfortable enough that there is no fear of making a mistake if answering a question). In the first video, the teacher was very strict, seemingly frustrated/annoyed, and kept a fast pace with his lesson. This, I believe, made the students anxious which then reflected in their confusion at the material and tasks at hand. In the second video, the teacher displayed a more open, friendly, and light attitude that made students feel more comfortable, relaxed, and confident in their ability to succeed (i.e. knowing they can receive help from a welcoming, warm-hearted teacher). Additionally, the teacher in the second video created class engagement by engaging himself into his material (i.e. use of gestures, role play of animals). This created a dynamic and active learning atmosphere. Students clearly learned material better in the second video.
