There were a lot of good tips in this unit. First and foremost, rapport is very important between teacher and students, and also between students themselves. This is more prevalent in groups that are together for the very first time. Groups who have previously been together have the bonus of knowing each other and feeling comfortable about participating with each other. Rapport activities and warmers are crucial to break the ice within the room and get students to relax. Activities that allow students to provide information about themselves is a beneficial activity for two reasons. One is that the students learn a little bit about each other, but it also allows the teacher to learn about their students and also provides them with an insight as to the students? level. This enables the teacher to prepare lessons at appropriate levels and on topics of interest for the students. It is important to aim the lesson at the appropriate level and also conduct the lesson at a pace that suits the majority of the class. For weaker students, they can be paired up with stronger students, to assist with clarity and understanding. However, it is important to ensure that stronger students don?t take over as the weaker students need to participate or it will impact on their learning. Different activities and lesson structure will have to occur for larger groups as these are more difficult to control than smaller groups. Having group leaders and working in groups or splitting into two larger groups according to levels, may assist the teacher in control and ensuring all students get to participate without getting bored. It is necessary to have extra activities and materials available for those who finish before other students. Ensure clarity of instructions and appropriate level for maximum benefit to the students.
