A course book is a textbook that students and teachers use as the basis of a course. A course books usually consist of a set of materials: (1) Student book - information for the teaching point. (2) Workbook - activities for the study phase. (3) Teachers resource book - activities for the activate phase. The advantages of using course books with a class such as, (1) Expected by students (2) Easier than creating own material (3) Well researched to correct student level (4) Offers continuity an progression (5) Offers a good balance of grammar, vocabulary and skills work (6) Offers many good ideas for an inexperienced teacher The disadvantages for using course books with a class such as, (1) Shouldn't be used for the whole class (2) Lots of book work can become predictable and boring for the students (3) Does not fit specifically with students needs (4) Teachers and students may disagree with the book (5) A course book is almost always a compromise (6) Course books dictate what is being taught Best use of course books with: (1) Use most suitable range (2) Do not use course book for an entire course (3) Create a balanced lesson by estimating time of course book tasks (4) Do not rely on the information presented (5) Explore ways to match the book material with the students requirements Teachers may decide to omit certain lesson from the course book or choose to replace it with similar materials. These materials can be divided into two groups: (1) Authentic materials - its real which helps boost the confidence of students as the students feel they can really understand English. Example newspapers, song, poems, brochures, menus an etc. (2) Creative materials - useful for English beginners as it often allows students to experiment. Example flash cards, crosswords, wordsearch,pictures stories, role play cards and etc.
