Teach English in ZhenjiAng Zhen - Maoming Shi
Unit 20 is about troubleshooting. In this unit, techniques are presented to help the teacher cope with problems that may and could occur in a classroom. At first, a teacher must know and apply techniques to establish rapport with his/her students. There are many suggested activities that would prepare you and the student for the rest of the course such as using questionnaires and surveys, pass the ball game, and needs analysis for you and the students to know more about yourselves. Moreover, teachers can use warmers at the start such as hangman, pictionary, tongue twisters and memory games. In a class, you will also meet students at different levels of learning, so you can use different materials to different levels, or you can have the same material but with a different task, and you can also pair stronger students with weaker ones. There also techniques for large classes such as using worksheets, pair/group work, making your instructions and voice clear, using choral repetition, appointing group leaders, and using dynamics. I learned that students must be encouraged not to use their first language as this would hinder their learning of the English language. As a teacher, I have to apply techniques such as making sure that the activities are at an appropriate level, the explanations are clear, use of English must be observed at all times, only respond to English, and constantly remind the students of what is the goal of learning the English language. Lastly, I learned that there are some reluctant students in a class for some reasons. However, as a teacher, we can help them participate in the class by using plenty of pair work, controlled practice, role-play, and a tape recorder. All he suggested techniques broaden my knowledge about teaching and these help me realize how challenging, yet fun it is to be a teacher.
