Teach English in Yangmei Zhen - Maoming Shi
Unit 3, talks about the different approaches, methods and techniques used to teach another language than the native language. The approaches, methods and techniques, change within history and by the hand of the psychological learning discoveries. This is how society has moved from the classical translation approach to more nature and nurture approaches that vary from Audio Lingualism to Suggestopedia, to Total Physical Response, to Communicative Language Teaching, to ESA, just to mention some approaches. The ESA methodology created in 1998 by Jeremy Harmer, is the method suggested which allows the students to Engage, Study and Activate their knowledge of the language. It is a method that tries to combine or allows the others methods to be used, as long as they fill the purpose of each ESA phase: engage, study, activate. In order not to be so predictable, ESA´s method can vary as a: Straight Arrow ESA plan, Boomerang ESA plan or Patchwork ESA plan. Though the unit gives examples of activities for ESA, I feel it?s examples are the same for it always shows role playing as THE activity to do during the activate phase, therefore I would have liked more varied examples. On the other hand, the unit gives many examples of activities to be used in a classroom for which I am grateful for. What I mainly learnt from this unit was the ESA methodology and the names of other methods in teaching a foreign language which allow me now to clearly see the methods I use in class and which one I am more comfortable with. In my case, the Communicative Language Teaching is the approach I like the most, because it allows the teacher to show varieties of the language according to a time, place and needs of the students, while making the students conscious of their own learning of the language depending their needs and interests.
