Unit 20 presents, groups requiring specialized teaching skills. These groups are beginners, children, business English learners, and multi/mono lingual learners.. Beginners can require special teaching skills : some beginners do not know shred of English, some use a different alphabet. A list of tips for teaching beginner students follows. * have clear and realistic goals, do not try to go to fast. * speak slowly and clearly * try not to use students' mother tongue. * use clear simple instructions. * adapt teaching for different levels, (beginner groups have a high variance in skill levels) * do not try to rush through planned lessons, if you cannot cover it. Another group requiring special skills are children. Occasionally teachers may have to deal with disruptive behavior. The behavior and attitude of the teacher may be the single most important factor maintaining discipline in the classroom environment. It is important to consider the reasons why such problems arise. There are many reasons including : * problems at home or outside the classroom : notify school administration, talk to child. * attention seeking : give student attention, make them your assistant or group leader. * peer pressure : rearrange seating assignments. * boredom : make lessons fun, varied, lively, involving, and interesting. * inconsistent rules : be as fair as possible. There are a set of unwritten rules that teachers should follow in order to mitigate discipline issues. * Do not be inconsistent. : children are very sensitive to unfairness. * Do not issue threats. * Do not raise your voice : this actually causes more antagonism * Do not have 'favorites' in the class. * Do not break the code : Follow your own rules. Dont be a hypocrite. * Never threaten or cause physical violence. * Know the codes of conduct at your institution.
