There are a lot of complicated expressions in English. Consequently, unit sixteen is about conditionals and reported speech. Both of which are confusing for the new English speaker. Conditionals are two phrases connected with ?if? and sometimes a modal verb such as ?would, could, or might?. Moreover, there are five types based on the conditions and usage of the clauses: zero conditional, first conditional, second conditional, third conditional, and mixed conditional. These phrases also have a connection with each other, for example: ?If I buy a ticket, I could go to the movies? which implies in order to go to the movies I would need a ticket. This ?condition? to have a ticket is one of the central points of a conditional. Sometimes the structures of the conditionals can be a bit confusing when referencing the past action with a present answer versus a past action with a past result. Regardless of the difficulty of this technical part of the English language the unit explains it well and also provides teaching ideas for new learners. Reported speech on the other hand is not as complex. Reported speech is the term used when repeating a quoted phrase from another individual. For example, ?John said ?I am walking to work?.? then becomes ?John told me that he was walking to work.? Although the change is slight, it can be a bit confusing. There are also time changes of when to include the past action rather than repeating word for word what the person said directly. Nonetheless, reported speech is something I use in my life daily without a thought as a native English speaker. Therefore, I found it much easier to understand than the conditional part of the unit. Overall, unit sixteen contains information on conditionals and reported speech in the English language.
