Teach English in ShuguAng Nongchang - Maoming Shi
While studying this unit, I have had two discernments that leave stark realizations to me. First, I have learned how I should teach my students so that I can maximize the absorption of lessons being taught. Second, I have learned the dangerous effects should I fail to handle my students appropriately. As a licensed professional teacher who has been teaching ESL and TOEIC for quite awhile now, I clearly understand the characteristics of a good teacher and learner, the roles of a teacher in a classroom, the language levels of students, the reasons why students learn English, and the differences between adult and young learners. However, it has suddenly dawned on me that I should not be quick in interrupting my students whenever I hear wrong pronunciation of words from them. Instead, I should let them finish reading or speaking first. Then I can take time to correct their mistakes. Otherwise, I may disrupt their concentration which is crucial in learning the language. Also while learning this unit, I have had a flashback of one of my classes where I handled multi-cultural students (i.e., Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese). I have realized that I should be aware of the way how I correct their mistakes. I think it is important to be sensitive to each of their background. I used to treat them equally regardless of their culture, but this unit tells that it can dictate the kind of learner a student can be. This is especially essential, so that no one will be embarrassed in the class and so that everyone will enjoy learning. When in front of the classroom, a teacher sometimes is not able to realize her mistakes unless somebody explicitly tells so. The aforementioned are, by far, two of the most significant actualizations I have ever had since I started teaching English as a Second Language and Test of English for International Communication.
