Teaching English one-to-one, I?m lucky enough to be free in choosing course books according to the student?s personal needs, interests, and aims and I normally juggle several books and plenty of ancillary materials. To create a vast input for myself I listen to loads of podcasts and sometimes I may think of a future lesson plan on a bus, for example, going from one lesson to another and having my ear buds in. Thanks the Internet, there are many different materials available now. I use BBC podcasts such as Outlook, The Why Factor, Something to think about, not always in full but partially. TED conferences are a great source of inspiration too not only for using with adults, as I have had lessons on Penguin Rescue Operation even with children with quite a good command of English, the only side effect, quite unexpected for parents, in those cases was the children?s wish to adopt a penguin. Among helpful and involving authentic reading resources I would name films and restaurant reviews, interviews with athletes and celebrities, articles on crime topics. There are many excellent course books and I really appreciate knowledge and efforts the authors put in them. One of my favourites (among affordable) are The English World, Unlock your Skills (Reading & Writing, Listening&Speaking), New Inside Out, Discover English, Top Secret, English for Engineers etc. The most important point in course books I consider continuity, as it provides constant rotation of the material not letting students to forget what they have already studied. Nevertheless, to make the most of the course book the teacher has to be persistent, flexible and creative to be able to omit, replace, adapt, and add something to the course book unit. Addditionally, working with teens it is always helpful to be familiar at least with Star Wars and Marvel characters.
