Unit 1 sets up the initial ideas of framework of what a TEFL certified teacher is and what to recognize in the beginning of teaching. Going into teaching, one doesn't see exactly what a good teacher is thought to be or what a good student has the possibility of becoming. Therefore, Unit 1 gives me a taste of what to come from further units and setting up the terms and labels that are used for various situations I will be teaching. First, the unit talks about the roles of a teacher, and how each is crucial to the overall picture of a successful teacher. I, myself, am comfortable with being a manager and facilitator as well as resource while I see being an Assessor is maybe not my strongest suit from the beginning. Ideally, I'll become more comfortable with handing out critique as well as engaging the students with critiques rather than beating them down. Second, the unit explains the definition of a Good Learner. A Good Learner is a motivated, willing student that engages, is not scared of risk, and accepting of the lessons. While a younger student differs from an adult, each is talked about in the unit and the variety of roles they perform and differ from each other. I see that motivation is probably one that differs the most. Adults are absolutely self-motivated if they want to learn a language, whether it be for career purposes or their own fulfillment. Young Learners, usually, aren't their on their own free will which lends them to be a little harder to motivate; this is something a good teacher strives to inspire in the young learners. Lastly, the unit talks briefly about the different levels that are taught, and how they have a variety based on their levels. I'm interested in each! Even the last level may be difficult for native english speakers for maybe they even haven't fully investigated the subtle uses of their own language!
