Teach English in ShAnmei Jiedao - Maoming Shi
This unit began with a discussion of the qualities of a good teacher. A number of qualities were discussed, but some of the most important were as follows: a good teacher is fair, a good teacher has good subject knowledge, a good teacher has the ability to motivate students, a good teacher loves teaching and a good teacher knows how to involve all students. After discussing the qualities of a good teacher, the unit introduced the various roles of a teacher. A teacher takes on many roles in the classroom. For example, a good teacher should be in charge of his/her classroom; this is the role of manager. A good teacher helps students know when they are correct or incorrect in their subject knowledge; this is the role of assessor. A good teacher is able to decide how to help a student who is confused or who doesn't know how to proceed with the lesson; this is the role of prompter. After discussing teachers, the unit discussed learners. Qualities of good learners were listed: a good learner listens, a good learner asks questions, a good learner participates in activities and a good learner is willing to experiment with the subject and to accept input and correction. Next, the unit explained the motivations, experiences and behaviors of several different age levels of learners. An adult learner is vastly different from a younger learner in his/her motivation, experiences and behavior. A teen learner differs from a preschool learner. In the final section of the unit, the various language learning levels were introduced. There are 6 levels of language learning: beginner, elementary, low/pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced. I learned the most from the section of the unit on language levels. The distinctions between the different levels were new to me, and I will need to increase my ability do distinguish between levels.
