Teach English in ShAlang Zhen - Maoming Shi
Unit 15 deals with Evaluation and Testing of EFL learners. It covers tools and importance of evaluation and testing both for the student and the teacher. Below is an summary of what I have gathered from the course unit. Evaluation is one of the key requirements in the process of an EFL course. There are a number of great importance associated with the evaluating during the course work. -It allows the teacher to analyse the language retained by the student up to the point after which they were evaluated. -It may provide a guide as to which language points to revisit or which skills to reinforce. -Other forms of evaluation such as diagnostic tests would point a way forward forthe teaher on the grounds of students revealed needs as shown by the test results Common evaluation tools include: a)Tutorials - where the teacher reviews the course work covered and discusses with students the aim of the course, how well they performed in the tasks and identified problem areas. b)Evaluation by the students. This method allows students to personally judge their acquired knowledge and progress by themselves. Best way to do this would be by means of questionnaires or guided discussion. c)Tests. Tests are relevant during a course to gauge students progress, but a student could also be tested for other purposes, such as to help the teacher assign or school t assign students to their appropriate group or class of language ability peers, or to achieve some internationally recognized language certificate for some particular skill. Examples of popular external exams for international recognition include but not in detail the following TOEFL, IELTS,TOEIC and Cambridge Assessment for diverse skills and purposes including General English (KET, PEC, FCE, CAC, CPE), Skills for life (Mainly ESOL), Business English (BEC and BULAT) and many more less popular exams.
