In this unit I learned about the basic concepts of parts of speech. First, nouns were covered which are words that can be classified according to purpose and the meaning. The types of nouns are common, proper, compound, abstract, collective, plurals, countable, and uncountable. Then, the unit moved to adjectives which are used to describe nouns such as people and things. The main types of adjectives are comparatives (comparing things, +er than) and superlatives ?the adj + ...est). Articles are either definite (the) and indefinite (a & an). There is also a zero article which is not used with nouns referring to something. Verbs are either transitive (followed be an object) or intransitive (verb that cannot be followed directly by an object). Verbs also have infinities which are the basic form of the verb: to go, to cry, to walk. The most important part of the verb unit was the forms: basic form, past simple, past participle, and present participle. It is very important for a teacher to understand irregular verbs and how to teach them to students. Adverbs add meaning or into the action denoted by a verb and it also modifies an adj. There are five main types of adverbs: manner, place, time, degree, and frequency. Gerunds are -ing form of a verb used as a noun, and it used in the same way as a noun. Pronouns are words used instead of noun or noun phrase. Pronouns have two main types: personal (I, me, you, etc) and possessive (mine, yours, his, hers) and has no article and does not follow a noun. There are also reflexive and relative pronouns. Prepositions show relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some other word in the sentence. There are three types of prepositions: time/date, movement, and place/position. Finally, conjunctions join words or groups in the sentence. Conjunctions either join words of the same class or join clauses of sentences.
