This unit was about coursebooks and lesson materials. As a teacher, you do have the choice to either use or not use the coursebook that is given to you when teaching in a foreign country. For teachers, sometimes it is necessary to create, replace or supplement sections of the course book. It is much more interesting when a teacher creates new material when teaching a class. Materials is divided into two groups which include authentic and creative material. Authentic can be taken from anything, books, magazines, newspapers, songs, menus, etc. You can create activities with all these different types of materials. Although, one of the disadvantages is that they are not graded for the level, so teachers must be careful when selecting. The advantages of authentic materials is that they are real and can be more interesting. Next is created materials, artistic teachers are more likely to use this method. This is by creating or using different materials including crossword puzzles, role-play, word search, etc. This way is much easier when it comes to grading the students. The materials usually given in a course book include the students books, workbook for the students, how to guides for the teachers, sometimes other materials such as cassettes, videos, or books. Using a course book can be very helpful to new teachers who don't know how they should teach. Course books provides a syllabus which is graded to a level that is suited to the students, it helps balance between grammar, writing, and vocabulary. It can also help make preparing for a lesson a lot easier. Although it is important to remember not to constantly use the course book as it could make teaching even worse. It is important to replace, supplement or adapt certain section of the course book for certain lessons. A course book is meant to help guide teachers throughout a lesson, not to be constantly used.
