Teach English in Jintang Zhen - Maoming Shi
This unit presents some situations that teachers will experience in the classroom, along with some solutions to deal with those problems. One of those problem situations is when students use their first language in the classroom, which keeps them from practicing the language they have learned. Some of the solutions to this problem is to be clear when giving instructions or explanations, only respond when they speak to you in English, make sure the activities are suitable for their level, and remind them frequently to use English only. Another problem that teachers can encounter is having large classes as this makes it difficult for the teacher to control students and give them the same attention and involvement. The use of pair or group work will help deal with this problem, and so would do by using choral repetition and assigning group leaders some roles to help in their groups. A third common situation is when having multilevel students; this can be dealt by separately grouping higher students and lower students together and give each group different materials about the same topic according to their level. Also, teachers can pair stronger students with weaker students to have the stronger ones help the weaker students. There are more situations that teachers have to deal with such as students who do not want to participate in class for any reasons, students who have difficulty to understand listening texts, and students who finish their work fast. This unit also gives some tips on what to do on the first lessons especially when having a new group of students who need to get to know each other and establish a good relationship, not only between them, but also with the teacher. This unit suggests some activities that will allow the students get to know each other, help the teacher know the students' levels, and discover the students needs in the English language.
